The days where tights were a simple necessity to keep you from falling victim to the cold are well and truly behind us. Why? Because now, they’re the main event.
Back in February, when we saw the AW20 runway shows, tights were front and centre of the collections with the likes of Miu Miu, Marine Serre and Gucci offering us tartan, logomania and rainbow iterations of what was, previously, the most lacklustre item in the hosiery section.
Then, along came Chanel. With the help of Gigi Hadid, Hyun Ji Shin and Mona Tougaard, the house showed off their soon-to-be cult tights that feature the interlocking CC logo. These, along with the Gucci logo tights, have taken over Instagram, Pinterest, and it-girl’s moodboards everywhere, and it seems as if they are not slowing down soon. With a slightly hefty price tag, though (the Chanel tights are rumoured to cost £330, and the Gucci tights are roughly £170), I have sought out other ways to fulfil my patterned tights desire.
One quick look at Instagram posts from the likes of Victoria Beckham and Alexa Chung show that expensive logos aren’t necessary in making your tights a statement piece. Instead, all you have to do is swap out your plain tights for patterned tights. Now, don’t worry, you don’t have to wear bright blue tartan tights à la Emma Corrin, a simple polka dot will do the trick.
I’ve found myself not only replacing plain tights with a polka dot pair, but I’m using them as a replacement for socks, too. That awkward bit of shin that shows when you want to wear a cropped jean and loafer combo? Shove on some polka dot tights! Make it fun! I mean, right now my legs are placed securely under my desk, in my bedroom, where no one can see them (thanks, WFH), but I know the spots are there, adding excitement to my outfit and patiently waiting for the day they can be let loose on the dancefloor. I can’t wait for that day.
